In September 2000, Wilson Bank & Trust established a pilot program designed to help school-age youth learn the value and importance of saving money. The program, conducted at Sam Houston Elementary School in Lebanon, offered a unique opportunity for students to deposit money into their personal savings accounts right at school.
Today, WB&T in-school banking is available to more than 15,000 students in preschools, elementary schools, middle schools and home schools in five Middle Tennessee counties. Students who open and contribute to their school bank savings accounts enjoy special benefits, like earning prizes and rewards. They also receive free issues of the Penny Press, Wilson Bank & Trust’s school bank newsletter, and earn special rewards for their teachers as well. Most importantly, though, the children who take part in in-school banking learn about financial responsibility and the importance of saving money – invaluable lessons that can benefit them for the rest of their lives.
