The Race of Life: A Graduation Message

June 3, 2019

A few weeks ago, Watertown High School had its graduation ceremony for the class of 2019. I was invited and had the honor to speak to 123 graduates and their families. The event was a great reminder of how the world has evolved since I graduated there in 2000 (with a class of just 39 people, I might add!). It was exciting to see many friends I’ve known my entire life, and the optimism and drive that the graduates had as they prepare to venture out into the world.  It was also great to take a selfie with the graduates (we didn’t know what that was 19 years ago!).

My overall message to the group was one that I truly believe exists at the heart of Wilson Bank & Trust:

  • Run the race of life as a marathon, not a sprint. It’s important to make thoughtful and long-term decisions consistently.

  • Strive to achieve personal goals, but along the way, never forget to assist others in achieving theirs too.

  • Always strive to maintain a positive attitude and think forward.

  • Carry a heart that consistently values and understands forgiveness for both others and yourself, and show genuine empathy to your neighbor on a daily basis. This is easier said than done, but understanding each other will help us achieve great things together in life!

Congratulations to the class of 2019 - I have no doubt they will contribute to making the world we live in a better place.  Not unlike the employees of Wilson Bank & Trust, who work to create a brighter future for the customers they serve every day.
