Each year, Wilson Bank & Trust’s We Believe Together program gives employees a chance to work with local charities that mean something to their branch or department. That includes some volunteer time to help these charities in some way. This year, I had the privilege to volunteer with WBT’s Training/Sales and Human Resources teams to help Emmanuel House in Carthage. Emmanuel House serves as an emergency shelter for women and children who need help getting back on their feet, for whatever reason.
For our workday, our mission was to revamp a bedroom and bathroom for a mother and her children, painting and redecorating to make a safe and pleasant living space. It needed some TLC. WBT had sponsored some improvements last year that consisted of tearing down an old shed and giving the building a thorough cleaning, but there was more to do, so I was glad we could contribute. Just adding a fresh coat of paint on the walls helped to brighten the rooms (bankers do paint!).
Since the house is intended to serve women and children from many different walks of life, I can’t imagine what any of them have been through in their past or what they will face in the future. I just hope that the small contribution that we made will make their stay a pleasant experience. It was very motivating to know that what I was doing could help make a positive impact on someone’s life. Prior to volunteering, I wasn’t aware of any kind of charity like this existed any closer than Nashville.
In my past career as a funeral director, it was always rewarding to be able to help families on one of the worst days of their lives. It’s an AWESOME feeling to be able to help others in a time of need, and my volunteer experience was a great reminder that what we do for the community extends well beyond banking.
